What is Adult PRP?

Psychiatric rehabilitation is a structured, goal-directed service that helps people develop, restore, or strengthen skills needed to function in the environments where they live, learn, work, and socialize. PRP staff teach, demonstrate, coach, practice, prompt, reinforce, and gradually reduce assistance as the participant becomes more capable.

PRP vs. Therapy

Therapy treats symptoms and emotional processes. PRP addresses how the condition affects daily functioning and helps participants practice real-life skills.

PRP vs. Case Management

Case management coordinates access. PRP emphasizes developing the participant's own ability to navigate systems and complete tasks independently.

PRP vs. Transportation

PRP is not companion work or routine errand running. Any activity must have a defined rehabilitation purpose connected to an approved goal.

Maryland Medicaid Referral Rule Notice:
For dates of service on or after July 1, 2026, PRP claims require the Individual NPI of an actively enrolled referring practitioner. Facility/Group NPIs do not satisfy claims requirements.

PRP can help an eligible participant develop housing-related skills, organize documents, navigate resources, communicate with agencies, and strengthen routines that support tenancy. It cannot guarantee housing or pay rent unless a separate authorized benefit exists.

PRP may teach the participant how to identify resources, organize documentation, communicate with agencies, complete steps, and follow up when those activities are connected to a rehabilitation goal.

Transportation itself is not the central purpose of PRP. Staff may teach transportation planning and, when permitted and clinically appropriate, use community-based sessions to practice mobility skills.

Yes, when both services are appropriate, medically necessary, and coordinated. OMHC treats symptoms; PRP addresses functional rehabilitation.

Referral rules depend on Maryland Medicaid and other payer requirements. Effective July 1, 2026, Maryland Medicaid requires the individual NPI of an actively enrolled referring practitioner.

PRP staff may support medication self-management skills, reminders, organization, and communication with the prescriber. They do not independently prescribe or change psychiatric medications.

PRP may build employment readiness and routines when tied to rehabilitation goals. Formal job development, placement, and ongoing job coaching are addressed through Supported Employment.

Length of service depends on ongoing rehabilitation need, progress, engagement, authorization, and whether the participant continues to benefit from the program.

Treatment connection and ongoing medical necessity are important PRP requirements. HelpStar reviews current payer and referral rules when treatment engagement changes.
